The origin of the symbol lies in an elegant love story dating back to the Tang Dynasty. A young student, on his way to the imperial examination, falls ill during his journey and recovers in a mountain village. During this time, he falls in love with the healer's daughter. As he leaves, the young woman gives him an unfinished rhyme, waiting to be completed. The young man passes the examination and encounters another unfinished rhyme in the presence of the emperor. These lines, written in two different places and times, perfectly complement each other, just like two people, two wishes, and two paths meeting at the right moment.
Impressed by this harmony, the emperor rewards the young man. The young man returns to his village; the two lovers reunite and marry. At their wedding, they write the happiness character twice side by side and hang it on a red paper. This is how the Double Happiness symbol was born.
